Our Opinion: Respect the Plaza's history

Santa Barbara city officials for years have been trying to give De la Guerra Plaza an extreme makeover. The vision they have for the plaza ignores its history and present uses.

We'll detail our concerns in future editorials. Today we pause to look back historical photographs from the News-Press archives that show how Santa Barbarans have used the plaza for more than a century.

The Borderre French House and City Hall

A 1901 vehicle across from the Borderre Hotel. Notes one book: "The French also played an important part in the life of the city. They headquartered themselves early on in (the) plaza."
